Verizon 4G LTE

Verizon 4G LTE is an innovative wireless technology that combines smart phones, tablets and internet into a single system.

Verizon 4G LTE: An Introduction

Verizone 4G LTE is a hub-based wireless technology that can be used to integrate the numerous internet devices in your home, as well as smart phones. Because of its speed, it has now reached the point where you can stream high definition movies and television shows, effectively allowing you to watch TV or movies from anywhere within your home, or on your cell phone.

“LTE” stands for “Long Term Evolution”. It is a part of the Third Generation Partnership Project. The goal of this technology is to provide ever increasing rates of speed and flexibility in wireless communications that consistently builds on previous incarnations. In other words, it “evolves”. The hope for LTE in the future is to have more and more devices that are compatible with its technology, including smart lighting systems, microwaves and so forth, though to date, only internet, television and smart phones are readily available.

The internet speeds that it provides are 5-12 Mbps, far faster than most other wireless technologies. This effectively frees your home internet from the need for cables. Other internet might be faster, but its wireless will not be as fast. The Verizon 4G LTE allows you to use high internet speeds anywhere in your home.

Verizon 4G LTE Devices

Verizon currently provides a range of devices that are compatible with its 4G LTE system:

Tablets: Verizon currently supports two tablets with compatibility with their 4G LTE system. First, there is the Samsung Galaxy Tab. This tablet provides a 600×1024 resolution, allowing you to watch high definition movies in your lap. The other is the Motorola XOOM Android Tablet. It provides a seven-inch, high-definition screen for easy viewing.

Internet: Verizon also provides two usb wireless receivers that will enable you to connect your internet directly to the wireless network. The first is called the Verizon USB551L and the other is called the Pantech UML290. With these, you will be able to use the full speed of your internet connection on any laptop anywhere within your home (or even in your backyard in those warm summer days).

Because of the speed of the actual wireless communications, Verizon 4G now provides some of the fastest wireless internet on the market today. You’ll normally find that your internet slows right down when it is connected with wireless, but with a Verizon USB key, you’ll be able to stay at the same high speed of your original internet service.

Hot Spots: Verizon provides devices called “hot spots” that connect to your other wireless devices. These are actually more of a negative than a positive, but they should be explained. In order to use the full speed of Verizon 4G LTE wireless, you will need to have the equivalent of wireless routers. Each of these hot spots can take up to five wireless devices, so one is probably sufficient for the average home. They are a little more expensive to purchase at first, but they will enable you to add more devices in the future.

Smart Phones: Verizon offers three Smart Phones that can be used with their wireless network: the LG Revolution 4G Android Phone, the Samsung Droid Charge 4G Android Phone and the HTC ThunderBolt 4G Android Phone. Each of these is a state-of-the art smart phone allowing for apps, watching television and roaming telephone use.

One very nice thing about this service is that, when you are within range of one of your wireless hubs, you can connect using your hub, rather than using a cell phone tower. Doing so can be a little tricky, so you should contact Verizon directly about the installation, so you don’t find yourself with unexpected charges.

Availability

The Verizon 4G LTE is currently available in 100 U.S. cities, including New York, Boston and Chicago. The long-term plan is to have Verizon 4G LTE available everywhere that 3G is available by the end of 2013.
